More about the “True Wolf”…

When Montana couple Bruce Weide and Pat Tucker made the decision to adopt an abandoned wolf pup in 1991, they had little idea of how their new houseguest named Koani would end up shaping their lives. After a lengthy trial-and-error process of learning how to share space with a territorial predator (Lesson 1: Always have plenty of replacement furniture on hand), they developed a healthy respect and profound appreciation for the line separating “man’s best friend” and White Fang. With Koani in the role of “Ambassador Wolf,” the trio made it their mission to educate others. Utilizing a wealth of archival footage and personal remembrances, director Rob Whitehair’s delightful all-ages documentary shows the long-lasting effects that his three stars (along with faithful canine companion Indy) had on their surroundings. Students, teachers, and even a few grizzled motorcycle enthusiasts are on hand to describe the ways their views on nature were changed by their encounters with Koani. Showing an admirable even-handedness towards its subject matter, True Wolf also takes time to explore the ethical concerns inherent in raising a wild animal, resulting in a documentary for nature enthusiasts that offers plenty of food for thought afterwards.

See you at the movies!
-Pam

Keep a Cool Mind

The first road sign I noticed as we pulled away from our Delhi hotel en route to Rishikesh gave the advice: Keep a Cool Mind. I knew India’s roads would be scary. I thought I was prepared. I guess one can never prepare for such chaos. Our driver from Delhi to Rishikesh chuckled when I asked if people were honking because they were frustrated, or because they wanted someone to move out of the way, or just to say I’m here. He said, to be a good driver in India, you need three things: good horn, good brakes and good luck. I’m convinced that our driver could have out scored anyone anywhere on any wii game that required racing a vehicle through an obstacle course of oncoming traffic, blind curves, loose animals, high cliffs and missing pavement.

India in my sites

India sent her message loud and clear. My bag was packed. Alarm set for 5am. All details accounted for. All that was left was to board the 7am flight and start the multi-leg journey to New Delhi. But, that wasn’t to be. At 1am, I got a call that the flight was canceled. There would be a full day before I could catch the next flight.

Breathe. Be.  A gift of a day with no to-do lists! What a way to be present and move with intention. The guided meditation during last night’s yoga class brought to mind one of my own.
Breathing in, though the flight was canceled I’m still packed and ready to leave.
Breathing out, I’m going tomorrow instead of today.
Still.
Going.
